Math: Addition and Subtraction

In Kindergarten we begin the concepts of addition and subtraction.  As you work on this at home; please do not feel the need to focus on the symbols and number sentences.  In Kindergarten and moving into first grade, we try to build a strong understanding of concepts through the children creating and explaining an addition and subtraction story through their words and pictures.

Today we read If You Were a Plus Sign

We then created some addition stories and shared them with our Math partner!

"There were three apple trees and two more grew, now there are five."

"There are two crayons and two pairs of scissors in the pencil box.  There are four items altogether."

A Visit from the Math and Science Innovation Center

We had a great lesson from the Math and Science center.  We learned about birds and their habitats.  We also learned how birds only lay enough eggs to fit in their nest.  We engineered a nest and counted out Robin eggs for our nest, then we graphed how many eggs were in our nest!  What fun!

Community Helpers and Station 14

We have had a blast learning all about community helpers during social studies.  We have learned about doctors, bakers, farmers, teachers, builders, and firefighters.  On Administrative Professional's Day, we even became bakers and baked a cake for our wonderful ladies in the office.  They were thrilled.  Some very special community helpers even came to visit the Kinders at Curtis!

We loved seeing our teachers 85 feet up!
